Meeting Summaries - 2006

December - We featured guest speaker, Dennis McKinsey who focused on his special area of study, Biblical Errancy. He also shared with us some video clips of TV programs that other groups in the freethinker community have hosted. Dennis encouraged us all to work for public access TV to be brought back to Columbus.

November - was our annual members meeting at which we elected board members for 2007 and heard reports by the treasurer and membership chair. We also would like to thank the following members who left the board as of the end of 2006: Dan Birtcher, Larry Buhrow, Chuck Hoisington, John Sterling. All of them served on the board for more than 1 year. Following the business meeting, we played a game created by Doug Berger and Roger Marcum - sort of a Jeopardy-style game all about Humanism. Great fun was had by all!

September -

August - Dr. David Goldberger, professor from the Moritz College of Law at OSU, discussed the legalities involved when campus groups want to discriminate.  He talked about the specific case of a Christian legal group on OSU's campus that openly discriminates against gays, and why that is permissible under the law.


July -  Dr. Richard Gunther
, professor of Political Science at OSU, talked about "Humanist Values and Ohio Elections."  He talked about the impact of the 2004 elections and efforts since then to reform Ohio's electoral system and organize for political changes that can promote social and economic policies more in line with humanist values. 
 
June- "Human Origins in Southern Africa" was presented by Dr. Jeffrey McKee, OSU professor of anthropology.  His presentation focused on results of his long-term research in South Africa and the impact of human population growth on Earth's biodiversity. 
 
May - HCCO is on the Move!  Are we moving in YOUR Direction?  Those in attendance divided into 6 small groups for discussion about some of the topics of the last year.  Each group then presented a summary of the discussion. 
 
April - Humanism and Art.  We watched a video called History Through Art:  The Renaissance 1400-1550.  Then Louise Marquis, a docent from the Columbus Museum of Art, talked about work of local artist Aminah Robinson.
 
March - In honor of Women's History Month, we started with a Quiz about Women in History.  That was followed by a presentation by member Dan Stanton about Elizabeth Cady Stanton.  We then watched a 30-minute video called "Equality:  A History of the Women's Movement" and followed that with a panel discussion by some female members who recounted their own memories and experiences of the Women's Rights Movement. 

February - Darwin: simple beginnings, enduring legacy,  Dr. Susan Fisher - Chair of the Dept. of Entomology, OSU
Presented an analysis of Darwin's beginnings and achievements.   She discussed what scientific research had influenced Darwin.   A more detailed account of Dr. Fisher's presentation is available by following this link.  Click Here

January - Community Involvement
We were pleased to host three speakers for the January meeting.  Vernita Johnson from SAFY (Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth) talked about opportunities to get involved in caring for foster children.  Sarah Straley from Simply Living talked about how simplifying our lives can be helpful and rewarding.  Jim Ridenour representing Amnesty International talked about the activities of the organization.  A more detailed account of this meeting is available by following this link.  Click Here
