Dr.
Jill Bystydzienski, Professor
and Chair of Department of Women's Studies at OSU. Lack of
Women in the Sciences
Dr.
Jill Bystydzienski helped
us celebrate Women's History Month in March by bringing in facts and
figures about the challenges women face as they enter the fields of
science, engineering, technology and math. Information from the U.S.
Department of Labor shows an increasing percentage of women to men
in these fields, but the total number of women is actually falling
because there are fewer men and women entering the professions. She
cited several barriers women face. They can include a lack of
family support and established collaborating networks needed for
research. She said the language of science can be gender-biased.
Teaching approaches may be male-oriented and women eschew
traditional competitive weedout processes. There also is a chilling
effect in classrooms because women are in the minority. Professor
Bystydzienski and the
National Science Foundation's ADVANCE program are promoting the
following remedies: creation of "relational" departments, new
family-friendly work schedules, changes in science terminology and
institutional transformations. She said many men entering the
science fields want to see changes as well.

January - Dr. Dale Van Kley,
History Prof from OSU - Age of Enlightenment This talk by Dr. Van Kley was about putting religion on the map
of enlightenment Europe. It was partly autobiographical, reflecting
a career-long experience in writing about religion in the 18th
century; along the way, it also engages the subject of "humanism"
both Christian and non-Christian. The talk hit on the French
Revolution and its relation both to religion and the Enlightenment.
