Humanist Program: Helping People Change
July 14 @ 11:30 am - 2:30 pm
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called “Going to HCCO” and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
Join us each and every second Saturday for free breakfast, coffee, and enlightening presentations. The coffee, fruit, and pastries start flowing at 11:30am and the presentation starts at 12noon.
This month the presenter will be our very own Jeff Dubin. Jeff has been a long-time board member, past President, and Vice President of HCCO. He is currently serving happily as an experienced member offering occasional advice and training to the board.
The topic of Jeff’s presentation this month will be:
How to Help People Change
Have you ever had a friend, family member or partner who could benefit from changing their behavior, but seemed unwilling or unready to do so? Maybe they smoked cigarettes, never exercised, ate too much fast food, or didn’t turn their college papers in on time. Maybe they had a social idiosyncrasy that led to getting in pointless arguments, alienating friends or blowing job interviews. What were you tempted to say to that person?
The most obvious methods of helping people change, even if well-intentioned, are often counterproductive. Research has shown that people go through multiple stages on the way to a behavior change, and that the best way to help is contingent on the person’s stage. In this interactive presentation, clinical social worker Jeff Dubin will offer science-based strategies to promote change in people you care about.
NOTE ON ACCESSIBILITY: Unfortunately this location is not handicap accessible. The meeting space is up two short flights of stairs. We apologize for this inconvenience. We are working on finding a long term space that meets this need for our community.
