The 12 Virtues of Rationality…
There are skills involved in being rational like noticing confusion, goal factoring, and debiasing. But rationality is about more than these skills. There are epistemic values inherent to the project of being rational that we often intuitively take for granted. This week Don will present on the 12 virtues of Rationality and facilitate discussion on them. Some of the virtues are very straightforward, while some provide important novel insights. The source material can be found here: http://yudkowsky.net/rational/virtues/
“These then are twelve virtues of rationality:
Curiosity, relinquishment, lightness, evenness, argument, empiricism, simplicity, humility, perfectionism, precision, scholarship, and the void.”
It is by holding fast to these virtues that we grow in true rationality, neglecting them we will surely fail and may not even notice.
Rationality is about the science of reasoning, and acting effectively to meet your goals.
We generally begin with introductions and socializing at 7:30 and the program starts at 7:45.
Parental Warning: We are a very casual group. There is some swearing and discussion of mature issues.
