August 12 @ 11:42 am
I grew up a Muslim, as my parents did before me and as their parents did before them. Considering where I am now, I think it’s fair to say that they didn’t do the best job.
The story of my life takes me through growing up in the world of post-9/11 America and being bullied, like having a girl yell “TALIBAN” in my face whenever I got on the bus to go home from another shitty school day or being called a “sand nigger” or a “camel jockey” just for looking a certain way or having an Arab sounding first name. I never felt like I belonged as either an Arab/Muslim or an American. I just desperately wanted to fit in with anyone who would take me, and I was rejected at every turn.
While I grew up in the faith of Islam, by the time I turned 18, through the use my brain, some apathy, and a touch of humor here and there along the way, I finally “grew up” and out of Islam.
This is my story.
