NEW EVENT: Community Service Activity: HCCO/COUNT Adopt-A-Highway
August 24 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am
On Saturday, August 24, HCCO, together with COUNT (Central Ohio United Non-Theists), is asking for volunteers to revive our participation in the Ohio Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) Program! In the past, HCCO had a stretch of highway on westbound I270 on the north side near the I71 interchange, but we’ve not been active in the program in recent years. However, recently ODOT has moved our section slightly east, to the Cleveland Avenue/I270 interchange, which is much more accessible than our former area. So we’re inviting members of HCCO and COUNT to participate again in this high-visibility community service program!
Each year, ODOT spends an average of $5 million to pick up litter — money that could be used in countless other ways to improve the condition and safety of our public roads. By gathering together to pick up litter along roadways, ODOT’s more than 1,500 AAH groups give Ohioans cleaner and safer roadways, help to foster pride in communities, and positively affect healthy economic development!
REQUIREMENTS AND WHERE TO MEET:
All volunteers will be trained in safety before going out onto the highway, and must comply with the following requirements:
1. Before attending, watch this safety video created by ODOT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwTaEDNNFLA&feature=youtu.be.
2. Sign a waiver of liability for ODOT before or on the morning of the event.
3. Participate in a review of safety procedures before going onto the interchange.
We will meet in the Home Depot parking lot (6333 Cleveland Ave, just south of the I270 Exit 27) at 9:00 AM.
All participants must be 12 years of age or older. Volunteers between the ages of 12 and 17 must have a parent or guardian sign a special release form. Please contact the event host at [masked] if you are bringing a minor.
As we will be on the side of a busy highway, volunteers should wear loose fitting, brightly colored clothing, long pants, gloves, and comfortable work boots or shoes. ODOT will provide safety vests, trash bags, trash pickers, and road safety signs.

The event will be rescheduled if it’s raining that morning.
Thank you for your participation!
